Flu is a common infectious respiratory illness spread by coughs and sneezes, it is also known as influenza, it happens all year round but most common in winter, it is caused by different viruses. People usually recover after a week when down with Flu.
Symptoms of Flu are:
- A high temperature
- Tiredness and weakness
- A headache
- General aches and pains
- A dry, chesty cough
- Cold like symptoms (blocked or runny nose, sneezing and sore throat)
You can protect yourself and your children from getting sick
by practising the following healthy habits:
- Wash your hands regularly with either ordinary soap, antibacterial soaps or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
- Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, or cover your mouth and nose with your upper sleeve but don’t use your hand.
- Trash used tissue.
- Refrain from touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread when you touch contaminated things.
- Remind your kids not to share cups, eating utensils and school supplies such as pen and pencil as these can spread the virus.
- Stay at home if you have flu as this can spread the virus to other people, also ensure you have enough rest as this will help you recover quickly.
- Ensure you add germ-fighting food to your diet such as Green tea, Garlic, Ginger and Guava.
- Follow the protective healthy habit mentioned above.
- Make sure you or your child gets enough rest.
- Make sure you drink plenty of fluids possibly water; it will help with hydration and the ability to fight the infection.
- Practice good health habits and keep your family’s immune system strong throughout the year.
- Eat balanced meal packed with variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Choose natural unprocessed foods.
- Get active as a family and involve in fun activities.
- Gargle with salt water to soothe a sore throat.
