Summer is the hottest season of the year, summer brings lots of outdoor social activities, which are not possible during the freezing cold winter and the season brings bright and longer days, which exposes the beauty of nature, grasses are green, flowers and animals return to the blossoming fields. Everyone dresses with light materials to feel cool under the hot sun, some fruits like mangos and pineapples become ripe. This season present the opportunity for people to enjoy themselves.

Summer is associated with life i.e.  birth and rebirth to life around us, plants blossom, animals happy and nature feels ‘alive again, so all these brings higher potential breeding of food bacteria, which can cause foodborne illnesses.

Here are the ways to help prevent foodborne illnesses eating when having outdoors during warm weather:
  • Separate raw and cooked foods: When raw food such as poultry, seafood or meat on a plate ensure you wash the plate and other utensils to serve cooked foods.
  • Stay clean: Wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and before preparing any food to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Cook food properly: Ensure food is properly cooked.
  • Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold: Ensure hot foods are wrapped properly or insulate in a container and refrigerate cold foods until ready to serve, otherwise, bacteria can multiply.
  • Ensure that food and drink are apart: Ensure drinks is kept in one cooler and food in another so the food cooler can be kept closed until ready to cook. Raw meat, poultry and seafood should be securely wrapped and placed at the bottom of the cooler, so if something leaks, it would not  get on fruits or vegetables that will be eaten raw.
