Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that causes the blood sugar to be higher than normal. Almost a third of people who have diabetes and prediabetes do not know they have it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The American Association of Diabetes Educators also said that your risk of developing diabetes increases as you age. If you are age 45 or older and you experience any of the symptoms below, the AADE suggests you consult your doctor about getting tested for diabetes. Here are some sneaky signs of diabetes you should look out for:
The most common signs of Type 2 diabetes include:
Frequent urination especially at night: Urinating frequently especially at night is a sign of diabetes. Raised glucose level force fluids from your cells and increase the amount of fluid passed to the kidneys which cause you to urinate more, also makes you dehydrated.
Excessive thirst: Excessive thirst is another common sign of diabetes, your body tries to get rid of the glucose building up in your blood causing you to urinate; the more you urinate, the more you become thirsty and vice versa.
Fatigue: Feeling tired all the time is another sign of diabetes, glucose gives the body energy needed to function and when the cells is unable to absorb sugar, you become tired.
Excessive hunger: When your body fails to use glucose effectively, it needs more fuel, so you will always feel hungry.
Blurry vision: This occur when the blood sugar levels is high, fluid is drawn from the lenses in the eyes causing inability to focus. Getting your blood sugar under control can help to correct your vision problems, leaving it untreated can result to other eye problems to occur.
Sores or cuts that won’t heal: Raised glucose can make it harder and difficult for the body to heal making cuts and sores stay open, which makes them more vulnerable to infection.
Advice:
- Are you sleeping less at night? Or found that you have cuts and sores that heal slowly or you constantly having infection? Please consult your doctor, as these are potential signs of raised blood sugar common to Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes.
- Speak to your doctor if you have a family history of diabetes, beware as genetic plays a huge role in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
- If you are suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or gestational diabetes, your risk of developing diabetes is high so speak to your doctor for diabetes screening.
