Dandruff Causes and Home Remedies

Dandruff is a skin disorder, which can be embarrassing and cause a low self-esteem, working around with hair full of particles-like on hair and shoulder. To avoid that, consider some available home ingredients to get it treated.  Dandruff can be a chronic condition, but it can be controlled with proper treatment such as non-medicated shampoo, prescription, mineral oil, which would remove flakes or keep dandruff under control. 

The flakes are often noticeable and embarrassing if they fall from your scalp on to your shoulders when the scalp is dry and itchy. Dandruff isn't contagious or harmful, but it can be unpleasant and difficult to get rid of.

Over-the-counter remedies might include shampoos with zinc pyrithione, which helps to target fungus and bacteria; ketoconazole, fights fungus; coal tar and selenium sulphide; gradual slow the growth and die-off of skin cells on your scalp; and salicylic acid, allows flakes to be washed away.

Dandruff, also known as Seborrhoea, targets the scalps of both young and old and if left untreated can lead to other conditions. In discussing dandruff remedies, it would be good to know the causes of dandruff:





Causes of Dandruff
The following can cause dandruff:

  • Dry skin – the most popular cause of dandruff
  • Psoriasis – one of the skin conditions that cause red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales.
  • Scalp ringworm – a fungal infection of the scalp
  • Sensitivity to hair products
  • Skin conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis (oily skin), or eczema.
  • The overgrowth of yeast-like fungus (malassezia) caused by stress, hormones, too much oil on the scalp and immune system problems.
Here are some home remedies for dandruffs

Drink enough water
Water is essential to health; lack of enough water in our bodies can cause dry skin, which can eventual lead to dandruff. It is very important to drink plenty of water daily to help the system function properly and prevent dry skin and scalp.

Coconut Oil & Lemon Massage
These contain some antifungal properties that can help to eliminate dandruff Coconut oil nourishes your hair, while lemon juice helps to treat dandruff at home without using harmful chemicals.  Take some coconut oil and mix half of lemon juice in it, rub on your scalp and massage for 20 minutes and wash it off and repeat twice or thrice a week. Also, because lemon contains acidity, which can help to balance the pH of your scalp, lemon juice can be added to water to rinse your hair. Repeat everyday until your dandruff disappears.

Baking Soda
Dandruff treatment can be carried out at home with baking soda, which can help to remove dead skin cells and absorbs excess oil. Wet your hair and rub a handful of baking soda onto your scalp for couple of minutes, rinse well with warm water and repeat once or twice a week. This can help to reduce the growth of fungi that can cause dandruff.

Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe Vera soothing and exfoliates the skin. Aloe Vera contains powerful properties, which soothe and heal irritated skin. Stop itching by massaging aloe Vera into your scalp and wash with shampoo.





Vinegar
The acidic properties present in vinegar helps in treating itchy dry skin, fungus and bacteria that cause dandruff. Mix of vinegar and water and rub to scalp for 30minutes then wash. Vinegar can also be used to treat hair fall.

Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is another way to cure dandruff at home.  Tea tree oil anti-acne, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties to help get rid of dandruff. Add a drop or two of tea tree oil to your shampoo and wash your hair penetrating to the scalp. And see the significant improvement

Garlic
Garlic contains some powerful properties to fight any conditions including dandruff.  Crush a clove or two of garlic and after mixing with water, use it on your scalp to see quick results. You could also mix in a little honey and ginger to prevent the pungent smell.





Olive oil

Apply 10 drops into your scalp and cover with a shower cap overnight. Follow your regular shampoo routine in the morning.
