Health Benefits of Antioxidant

When it comes to protecting skin, nature has provided us with a powerful weapon. Antioxidants have long been known for their health benefits, but their importance in helping with skin care is now becoming increasingly clear.

Antioxidants have a positive effect on the condition of our skin and our overall health.  They work by neutralising free radicals, highly reactive molecules that can damage the skin cells, leading to greater cell stability within the body.  However, as they do this they themselves become oxidised.  So they need to be constantly replenished.  To maintain your skin in a youthful condition, you need to make sure you're consuming high levels of antioxidants.

Eating the right foods will help; vegetables such as broccoli, spinach and artichokes and fruits like cherries, watermelon and raspberries are high in antioxidants.  However, you can also take them in supplement form, which may be easier than changing your diet.

The best-known antioxidants to improve skin condition including vitamins C and E along with minerals such as copper, zinc and selenium.  Plants use antioxidants to protect themselves from the hazards of sunlight and our skin uses them in a similar way to ward off UV damage.  When the sun hits the skin, it releases free radicals which go on to damage the skin cells. leading to wrinkled, thickened skin and uneven skin tone.

All antioxidants have a sun protective effect, but Lycopene, found in tomatoes, is considered to be one of the most powerful in this regard.
