Cracked Heels, Causes and Treatment

Cracked heels are caused by insufficient moisture, which can become sore at some point. Cracked heels are common foot problem, which may develop into painful fissures if it is not treated, the cracks can become infected leading to more complicated issues. You should consult your physician, if you have soreness, pain, swelling or persistent problems in the feet area.




Causes of Dry Cracked Heels

Beyond dry skin, some other causes of cracked heels may include:




  • Cracks are more common as you get older
  • Diabetes can affect the body’s ability to produce oils making the skin more vulnerable to dryness.
  • Vitamin deficiency, minerals and zinc can lead to crack heels.
  • Obesity causing increases pressure on the normal fat pad under the heel making it expand sideways.
  • Harsh soaps that can strip the skin off natural oils.
  • Prolonged standing putting pressure on the feet especially on hard floors can result to cracked heels.
  • Dry ski due to climate condition, such as cold or low humidity.
  • Open backs on shoes causing the fat pads in the heel to expand resulting to pressure on the heels.
  • Wearing high heels, which does not fit properly.


Ways to Prevention Cracked Heels




  • Avoid standing or sitting in one position crossing your legs a long period.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated
  • Use pumice stone few times in a week to prevent dry skin
  • Keep the heel moisturised regularly to prevent the heel pad from expanding

  • Wear better fitting shoes
  • Healthy food rich in zinc, essential fatty-acids and vitamins
  • Moisturise regularly

  • Lemon and Olive oil
  • Foot scrubbing

  • Honey is good for skin and nourishing because of its antibacterial properties

Advice
  • People with diabetes should not attempt to scrape or cut the skin of their feet with pumice stones, razor or any sharp instrument due to the risk of infection. See your doctor or podiatrist for help.
  • Seek medical help if you have a severe problem of cracked heels.
