Is Chocolate Healthy For You?

Are you thinking how dark chocolate is healthy? I used to think like that too not until one of my lecturer discussed all the health benefits of dark chocolate.  Well, I’m here to tell you all about dark chocolate and how beneficial dark chocolates are to human body.  

As one of chocolate lovers, when I was lectured by dark chocolate and its amazing benefits, I was very happy to know that as a health professional, I can still eat my dark chocolate in moderation, however,  it is important to know that all chocolates are created differently, the health benefits of processed, highly sweetened chocolate are slim but the dark chocolate benefits are many.

According Prof. Rashed who published a review of chocolate health effects in the Netherlands Journal of Medicine states that the recent discovery of biologically active phenolic compounds in cocoa has changed human perception on chocolate; emphasised on the stimulated effect on aging, oxidative stress, blood pressure regulation and atherosclerosis 

Eating dark chocolate is healthy with lots of great benefits. Despite its bad reputation for causing weight gain, there are a number of health benefits associated with dark chocolate.


Here are some of the health benefits of eating dark chocolate



Possible health benefits of chocolate:

  • Prevent free radicals: Dark chocolate fight harmful free radical, which can cause disease.  Dark chocolate are packed full of antioxidants which are believed to neutralise free radicals and prevent the body from free radicals causing certain condition that can develop to life-threatening disease.
  • Lowering cholesterol levels: some studies have proven that chocolate could lower cholesterol levels.  The cocoa butter found in dark chocolate contains heart healthy monounsaturated fat that can be found in olive oil. Also. Dark chocolate’s cocoa polyphenols may control cholesterol level.
  • Aid Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar:  If you are diabetic, it has been proven that the higher the intake of cocoa content, the lower the sugar content, the better. The researchers found out that dark chocolate lowers the blood pressure and decreased fasting blood sugar.
  • Chocolate is packed full of tremendous antioxidants: The Study published in Chemistry Central Journal, compared dark chocolate to some fruits such as cranberry, blueberry and pomegranate, the research mentioned the total flavonol and polyphenol content can be compared to some of these fruits
  • Streamline cognitive function:  Dark chocolate helps to boost focus and memory, so its dark chocolate can improve cognitive ability specifically in the elderly.






Advice

Having said that dark chocolate is healthy, it should be consumed moderately with 70 per cent cocoa content or higher because such chocolate is healthy and packed with powerful antioxidants and less sugar healthy to the body.
